Petra Mojo is a contemporary abstract painter based in Lisbon, Portugal.
Her practice centers on the exploration of surface, texture, and the material qualities of paint, with a focus on the interplay between gesture and material presence.
Rather than adhering to a fixed aesthetic, her paintings shift in scale, density, and restraint while maintaining a consistent focus on presence and perception. Each work functions as a record of attention — an investigation of how paint holds energy in space.
Introduced to oil painting as a child by her father, also a painter, Mojo developed an early understanding of material and technique that continues to inform her contemporary practice.
Her work moves freely between quiet, textured monochromes that hold stillness and luminous, energetic compositions alive with gold, vivid color and joyful gesture.
Each piece emerges from what feels most authentic in the moment — sometimes deep restraint, sometimes exuberant celebration.
She paints alla prima when the energy is immediate, other times she builds slowly, layer by layer. Many pieces begin on the floor — canvas or paper laid flat so she can move around it, use her hands directly, and feel the surface with her whole body.
She works in oil, acrylic, mixed media, watercolor and gouache on linen or archival paper — embracing the physicality of every material and support.
Works are held in private collections internationally.
